Geraldines interest for Psychology, Counselling and Psychotherapy began in London and returning to Ireland in 1994 Geraldine became involved in voluntary counselling, training and education.

Geraldine currently works in private practice, psycho-education as well as the charity sector.

Geraldine Burke has been a major contributor to the development of the Southern Regional Committee of the Irish Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (serving as chairperson for six years) and campaigning for statutory regulation of the profession. Geraldine has studied both nationally and with international trainers in the area of trauma, critical incident stress management and debriefing, post- traumatic stress and multi-sensory trauma processing. Geraldine has also trained in EMDR a recognised treatment for post traumatic stress. Geraldines approach is integrative, person centred, and focuses on the needs of the individual, couple or group.

Geraldine specialises in the area of loss and grief, particularly disenfranchised and complicated grief or prolonged grief, and how it impacts on the lives and health of individuals in a host of settings.

She says that “Loss occurs not just through bereavement but in so many other ways. For example, through family breakdown, loss in friendships, loss of work, dreams and hopes, through trauma or abuse, through ill health or incapacity. Grieving is a natural response to loss and is unique to each person. Whilst one person may have good support around them, for others outside professional help and counselling can be of great benefit, if not essential to their well-being and their mental health.”
